Traditional music. It’s as integral to the proud identity of Prince Edward Island, Canada as the province’s rich, red soil and salt-kissed sea breeze.
The Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival has been sharing, celebrating, and preserving the traditional sounds of PEI and Atlantic Canada since 1976, when founders Joe Pete Chaisson and Bishop Faber MacDonald rolled a flat bed truck onto a potato field and hosted performances for the surrounding community. Their intention was to protect the rich and proud history of fiddle music on the island and instill its spirit into future generations, with all proceeds from the festival going towards music education.
In 1981, Joe Pete’s son Peter took over the leadership role and worked closely with his extended family and their local community to keep the festival thriving until his untimely passing in 2015.
Now, over four decades after the festival’s first edition, the third generation of the Chaisson family is carrying on the tradition while adding some fresh new components.
In 2016, they launched the Rollo Bay Music Camp, which offers instruction from world-class educators in the days leading up to the festival. All proceeds from the festival are still going to support traditional music education in Eastern PEI.
Over the years, the festival has grown steadily in both size and scope, welcoming a host of world-class fiddlers to its iconic main stage, including Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Richard Wood, Troy MacGillivray, Jerry Holland, The East Pointers, and of course, The Chaisson Family. What’s more, that stage sits on the very same grounds that hosted the first edition of the festival over 40 years ago.
In addition to the main stage performances, visitors are encouraged to join in the fun with activities like open jams and square dances happening on the regular during the festival’s annual run. Whether you’re camping onsite or staying nearby, you’ll experience the best of Eastern PEI’s beautiful landscape, world-famous hospitality, and of course, its treasured traditional sounds.
The Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival has become one of the Maritimes’ can’t-miss musical events, yet still maintains the grassroots, down-home essence that makes it so special. Come join us in carrying this tradition forward, with plenty of foot tapping and jig dancing along the way.
