Point of Interest
Displays of artifacts, animals, and habitats bring over 10,000 years of cultural and natural history on the Hillsborough River to life. Interpretive centre offers guided tours and displays about the rivers importance in terms of its history, the variety of bird species, plant life and animals that it supports and their habitats. Displays explain the rivers use as a transportation route.
The Eco-Centre's viewing tower provides a panorama of the Hillsborough River, the Island's first designated Canadian Heritage River. The Hillsborough River was the primary travel corridor for aboriginal peoples and French, Scottish, Irish, and British settlers. In the Eco-Centre, you will see displays of archaeological artifacts, an historical Mi'kmaq canoe, the building of tall ships, the movement and production of farm produce via water, railroads, and roads, community life, wildlife and natural history.
Located adjacent to Confederation Trail in the heart of Mount Stewart, the Eco-Centre is readily accessible by hiking, cycling or vehicle.
Open daily in July and August. Off season tour bookings are available at a small fee. Our web site at www.mountstewartpei.com offers tour itineraries for birding, hiking, and culture on the Hillsborough Canadian Heritage River. History lives on the Hillsborough!
