The town is situated on a peninsula, bounded by the Hillsborough River, Charlottetown Harbour, Hillsborough Bay and Fullerton's Marsh. Stratford prides itself in having 29 areas of well maintained parklands. It is a full service community with an ever growing population of about 7,000. A significant escarpment begins in the Keppoch-Kinlock area and runs for several miles east through Alexander and Pownal. This prominent land feature affords dramatic views to the south overlooking Hillsborough Bay and the Northumberland Strait.
Stratford means Road Over Water
The Town of Stratford was once divided into five communities:Southport, Bunbury, Cross Roads, Keppoch-Kinlock and Battery Point which amalgated in 1995 forming the Town of Stratford. In 1961 an updated bridge was constructed between Charlottetown and Stratfort and later widened in 1997. With the new Hillsborough Bridge came a great population growth.
The earliest settlement dates back to the 1750s when several Acadian families located in the Bunbury area. These first Acadian settlers brought farming, shipbuilding and brick making to the area. When the European settlers arrived some 20 years later, the land was opened for further development.
